The barbarian invasions of the 1st century BC were not all military invasions. More than a few of them were cultural invasions in that they wanted to essentially become a part of the Roman empire. They wanted a piece of the Latin pie and live the good life as they saw the Romans doing. The problem with this is that they brought with them many different customs and cultural values alien to the Romans.
There were clashes and violence. There was a lot Sex and interbreeding as well. With the increase in clashes along the border as well as it’s general size and maintenance the Romans opened their legions to enlistment by the foreigners. It became so that it was difficult to find a Roman with an actual Roman name or genetic background. They were all Celts and Germans as well as a host of others. Initially what had started it all was Asian tribes to the far east experiencing clashes with the Chinese which proved more than a match for them and these tribes by the singles and half dozens and dozens began slamming up against their neighbors to the west. This created a domino effect like that of balls on a billiards table consecutively knocking each other across the table until they bumped up against the walls of the empire. Regardless of how strong these walls were with enough pressure and time they would break just as they did. Soon the Romans had no choice but to find a way to deal with them since warfare with all of them was too expensive and out of the question.
Some allied themselves and exchanged wives and Sex slaves and settled down while others were more hostile. Still others sought to simply cross through thinking they could come out on the other side. The problem was here that there was no other side, the empire just stretched on until they came to sea.
