Slang and innuendo is a fine art in the English language. Some purists who insist on proper English usage for everything miss the point of a vibrant, living language that must grow and change in order to hold onto that status. Still others would assert that the use of the vernacular for sexual terms indicates ignorance. To the contrary, the use of slang, and particularly self-created slang, is a good indication of intelligence and engagement in current culture.

Various terms can tell us a lot about how we think about sexual behaviors and our desire for sex. ‘Doing the nasty’ is a playful phrase. It also gives an indication that sex is dirty for many of us in American culture. Similarly, bumping uglies speaks to an anxiety many of us have about the appearance of our genital organs. On the other hand, phrases like getting it on and making whoopee speak to the plain and simple fun side of sex. Making love is not only a polite term, but a way that our language links deep emotional connection with the act of having sex.

Our slang also says a lot about our sexual activities in particular circumstances. Most of us would want to believe that we were summoned for a regular old, hot booty call as opposed to a pity fuck. The emotional and erotic connection between friends with benefits is still something else entirely.

Fun phrases for sex can arise when people come up with their own euphemisms. Scenarios just seem to happen in life that led to these occasions where the use of new phraseology comes about. For example, perhaps a couple got together while one or the other of them was doing some construction work. Other things soon happened, and so the phrase became fixing the floor. For another example, something erotic might happen during a music lesson. How about tinkling the eighty-eights or rosining the bow for a couple of catch phrases that could be unique, yet sound suggestive should the couple want to come out with their words for sex.

Let’s face it; sex is fun. Sex can bring us closer. Sex can be divisive. Sex can be many things to many people and we need every term that we have to describe sex.
